Oh no. Here comes Obama… Bono on karma and grace

So, I’ve been really intrigued lately by the craziness surrounding Roger Clemens.  Accused of loading up on roids and HGH by his former trainer, Brian McNamee, the all-time great has been vigorously defending his reputation.

He’s held press conferences, released statements through his attorneys, and shouted at lawmakers in congressional hearings, all in an effort to convince the public that his crazy-good career is the result of hard work and raw talent not needles and pills.

And I’m not here to offer an opinion on who’s telling the truth.  Frankly, we should all know better than to believe that it is as black and white as one person lying.  Situations like this are always a mix of half-truths, misunderstandings, false motives, and dangerous assumptions that end up implicating all parties to some degree.  You and I both know that most of the time there is no clear good guy or bad guy, just one big mess.

Case in point: Clemens has admitted that his wife loaded up on HGH.  Yeah, did you catch that?  While saying that he has never touched the stuff, Clemens admitted that his wife, Debbie, took HGH to get ready for a swimsuit photoshoot.  And that as a result, any reference of his name with HGH or roids was likely confusion with his wife’s use.

So, check this out.  While defending himself, he implicates his wife.  I’m sure Debbie knew he’d do so, but still does that not seem kind of low?  “It wasn’t me, it was my wife.”  Nice move, Roger.  Haven’t I heard this somewhere?

My mind instantly jumped to the very first sin.  Adam and Eve disobey God’s rules for life in the garden - all in an effort to gain an edge in the world - and when confronted about it, Adam refuses to be straight up about the whole deal and instead says, “She did it” and the very first marital spat ensued.  No clear winner or loser there either - just a big fat mess.

Yeah, some things never change…and that’s why I have no idea who to believe.

Thankfully Congress is involved in this situation. Seriously though, this is a joke. If I were Roger’s lawyer I would have stood up and said “This is ridiculous! My client gets paid to play a child’s game and you get paid to make laws. What is wrong here?”

Johnny P., I’m with you. Congress has more important matters. This whole freak show is not going to change anything. The MLB owners and union agreed (2005) to new testing requirements and penalties that are up to NFL and MLS standards. Just what are they hoping to accomplish? A constitutional amendment?

My hunch is that Roger will go to his grave before admitting to getting loaded. As a dad who has undoubtedly taught his kids differently, Roger has too much to loose in the eyes of his sons (all ballplayers), and his sons have too much at stake to bear that burden throughout their own careers.

Adam said Eve made me; Eve said the snake made me; and the snake didn’t have a leg to stand on…
